      FAQ

A professional association will work towards issues that are overarching to the profession, that are separate from regulatory and collective bargaining functions. These four “pillars” are Advocacy, Public Relations, Continuing Education and Research.
No. The Alberta College of Paramedics governs the profession in the public interest, manages education, entry to practice examinations, continuing competence and standards of practice. Advocating in the practitioner’s interests is outside of the College’s mandate.
No. The Alberta Paramedic Association is not a union and will not engage in collective bargaining.
Unions look out for labor issues like hours of work, pay and working conditions with specific employers through collective bargaining and grievance proceedings. Advocating for a profession’s broader interests is outside of a union’s mandate.
No. the Alberta Paramedic Association is a voluntary membership organization. The goal however, is to provide such value for your money, that it would make very little sense not to be a member.
The Regional EMS Foundation in Grande Prairie and the EMS Foundation in Calgary are very locally specific organizations, which support local initiatives for specific services. The Alberta Paramedic Association is taking a larger and more inclusive approach for all practitioners in Alberta regardless of area of practice and geographic location.
